Maldives
Unlike the steep wall nearby, Meedhoo Wall, Meedhoo Coral Garden has a gentle slope and dense, varied coral. The dive begins on a plateau of branching and table corals, and the slope is adorned with large gorgonians and soft corals. The overhangs shelter schools of soldierfish, squirrelfish and cleaner wrasses, and whitetip reef sharks occasionally glide past. Jackfish are among the common sightings at the site. The vibrant coral cover makes the place a photographer's delight.
In Addu, the first scientific account is that of J. Stanley Gardiner, who spent 11 to 15 April 1900 at the atoll and collected fauna and flora chiefly on the islands of Midu (Meedhoo) and Maradu. In the far southern Maldives you can dive all year round, but January to April tends to be the best time, with warmer water and calm seas.
