Marsa Shoni bay works like a huge natural pool, sheltered from the wind. A wide sandy-bottomed channel links it to the open sea. Seasonal floods from the Eastern Desert carved channels to the sea and helped form this sheltered bay with its sandy shore.
To the north and south, the bay leads to plateaus covered in coral gardens. On the south side there are coral blocks with many colourful hard corals.
