Egypt
The reefs to the north and south of the Marsa Murena bay have beautiful rock formations and even small canyons to venture into. The north side is covered with fire coral, and sightings of sharks are common there. The south side runs across a seagrass meadow to a coral block with several cleaning stations, a stretch known for its plethora of soft coral.
In the middle of the bay, a small seagrass area is where giant green turtles can be seen, and the dugong sometimes pays a visit there. Marsa Murena is among the sites with recorded dugong sightings on the western coast of the Egyptian Red Sea.
The site has many species of coral and of reef fish, adult and juvenile, as well as leaf fish and seahorses. There are also coral gardens. Other animals at the site include goatfish, stingrays, crocodile fish, snappers, boxfish, eagle rays, butterflyfish and angelfish. Sometimes it is possible to encounter dolphins and small whitetip reef sharks.
