Maldives
The Koattey area of Hithadhoo is famous locally for its biodiversity, with rich reefs and the Eidhigali Kilhi wetlands. The Eedhigali Kilhi Koattey Area (mangrove and marine area) was declared protected on 07/12/2004, covering 770.62 ha. On the outer reefs of Addu, the 2016 El Niño bleached the corals and caused major damage. In Addu, diving is usually possible all year and mantas tend to show up throughout the year; the water tends to be warmest between January and March.
