Maldives
Schools of sharks patrol the reef, along with blacktip and whitetip sharks. It is not uncommon to see nurse sharks sleeping under coral blocks. Along the drop-off, holes and cracks shelter flatworms, nudibranchs, shrimp and leaf fish. On the sandy patches, there are garden eels and mantis shrimps.
Some massive corals (Porites) on the reef are more than 2 m in diameter and, since they grow 1 to 2 cm per year, their estimated age is very high. Because of its remote position and little pollution, on some nights bioluminescence lights up the water of the reef. In the Huvadhoo region, it is recommended to dive during the northeast monsoon, from January to May, especially on a liveaboard.
