Egypt
The Aragon was a 1905 Royal Mail ocean liner, 156 m long, requisitioned as a troop transport in the First World War. Before that, in 1913, she became Britain's first Defensively Armed Merchant Ship (DAMS), with two 4.7-inch guns on her stern. In December 1917 she was bound for Egypt carrying about 2,200 soldiers, 160 volunteer nurses (VADs) and 2,500 bags of Christmas mail. On 30 December 1917, while awaiting permission to enter the port, about 8 miles from Alexandria, she was torpedoed by the German submarine UC-34. 610 people died, among them Captain Bateman.
In the region, the water is around 18 °C in winter and reaches 29 °C in summer, and the best time to dive in Alexandria is usually from June to October.
