Thila, in the name of the site, is the Dhivehi term for an underwater pillar. In the region, the island of Himithi, in Faafu, used to be inhabited, and its islanders were resettled on other islands so that Friday prayers could be held. In the region, the great Himithi channel lies on the west side of Faafu Atoll. In Faafu, from around April to November is usually monsoon season, with changing currents that can affect visibility.
