Egypt
Gota Sheleniat is very colourful, with beautiful purple soft corals. The wealth of fish, ranging from a cluster of glass fish to reef fish of every kind, scorpion fish and crocodile fish, makes the site a paradise for photographers and filmmakers. On one dive in October 2023, large scorpion fish, anemone fish, large moray eels, colourful nudibranchs and flatworms, a potato grouper and a school of glass fish turned up.
The site lies within Wadi El Gemal National Park, which covers about 4,770 km² of land and about 2,000 km² of sea. Along the park's coast, seagrass beds support the dugong, an endangered species, and the green turtle, which nests on the coast and islands. Wadi El Gemal Island hosts the world's largest known nesting colony of the sooty falcon. The Wadi El Gemal area is inhabited by the Ababda, the northernmost Beja tribe, who maintain a traditional way of life.
