Ginnie Springs sits on the Santa Fe River near High Springs, Florida, where the Floridan Aquifer surfaces into a basin averaging 4m deep and reaching 15m in the Ballroom, a chamber sealed by an iron grate that stops divers before the true cave system begins. Entry is shore-based, down wooden stairs from the riverbank -- no boat needed. Visibility holds a steady 30m, water stays at a constant 22 degrees C year-round, and the floor mixes limestone shelving with heavy sand. Current in the main basin is gentle, but 150m away Devil's Ear vents one of the world's most forceful cave flows, strong enough to shoot an untrained diver upward -- full cave certification is mandatory there. Open Water divers are welcome in the Ballroom; look for gar, Suwannee bass, bowfin, mullet, sunfish and catfish.
