In the North and South Malé region, there are ten key aggregation sites for reef manta rays (Mobula alfredi). The island of Gasfinolhu began as a camp with thatched (cadjan) huts; in the early 1980s it was leased to the Italian company Valtur, which managed it until 2008, and it later became Finolhu Villas, operated by Club Med.
