Maldives
In the Second World War, when the British Navy set up the 'Port T' base on Gan (1941), later RAF Gan, the Gan Channel was the only opening of the atoll not permanently closed by anti-submarine nets. The southern tip of Gan island, next to the channel, is the southernmost point of the entire Maldives. Addu's reefs largely escaped the 1998 bleaching and retain relatively healthy hard coral. Addu is notable for year-round manta encounters. At the site, conditions are usually calmer from January to April.
