Egypt
Gabr el Bint means 'the grave of the girl' in Arabic. No road reaches the bay; overland, you get there by camel, about 90 minutes from the end of the coastal trail, or on foot. Because of this the coral is essentially undamaged, and there are no facilities at the site. Above the bay, Gebel Umm Isheirat rises past a thousand metres.
Two dives start from the same spot, beside a large hard coral buttress. The northern route follows the wall, passes a shelf of gorgonians and returns through a sandy valley, while the southern one has crevices and caves. The wall has large gorgonian fans and many black corals. Schools of snapper, milkfish and turtles are common, alongside blue-spotted stingrays, mackerel, emperors and crocodilefish. Visits by large pelagics are more common here than at other sites, and occasionally a dolphin appears.
The water is usually 21 to 22 °C in winter and 25 to 27 °C in summer, and a 5 mm suit is enough, with a hood in winter. A calm sea at Dahab does not guarantee good conditions at the site.
