Maldives
In 2015, the residents of Gaadhoo were moved to another island because of their small population. In December 2021, an ocean area in Gaadhoo, as well as the turtle nesting area and the surrounding beach, were given protected status.
39 different genera of corals have been recorded on the reefs of Gaadhoo, and the island has at least 5 species of seagrass. Of the 91 fish species recorded in Gaadhoo, 38% were not found in any other seagrass meadow studied in the atoll.
The ocean area near Gaadhoo is rich in megafauna, including endangered turtles, manta rays and sharks. Laamu Atoll has manta ray sightings year-round, although historically with peaks from May to June and from October to November.
