Maldives
In Dhivehi, "beyru" means "outside", and Gaadhoo Beyru is the name of the outer reef next to the island of Gaadhoo. On the southern edge of the Laamu atoll, where this outer reef is located, manta sightings seem to be seasonal and to increase during the northeast monsoon, although the data are still limited.
Gaadhoo is an island of Laamu that was once inhabited. In December 2021, the Maldives Ministry of Environment gave protected status to the turtle nesting ground and the surrounding beach in Gaadhoo, and also to an ocean area in Gaadhoo. The beach at Gaadhoo is a nesting and feeding ground for two species of endangered turtles, and the sea near the island is rich in megafauna, including manta rays and sharks.
