Egypt
On the esplanade of the main arm of the island of Antirhodos, the remains of a 3rd-century BC palace were found, with a marble floor and measuring 90 by 30 metres, believed to have been Cleopatra's royal quarters. On the seabed there are red granite columns, sphinx statues, steles inscribed with hieroglyphs and the ruins of a temple dedicated to Isis. Several of the carved sphinxes represent Ptolemaic kings, among them the father of Cleopatra.
There is also a remarkably complete ancient shipwreck at the site, carbon-dated to between 90 BC and AD 130. Among the submerged ruins of Alexandria, the marine life is typical of the Mediterranean, with groupers, octopus, sea bream and moray eels. In Alexandria, the best time is usually from June to October, when the sea is calm, while in winter the storms known as nawaa cloud the waters of the harbour and make it unsafe to moor boats.
