Cape Clear was a cargo ship of 5,085 gross tons, built by Lithgows in Glasgow and launched in 1939. In 1941 she was damaged by a mine off the River Mersey. On 21 August 1944, while sailing north up the Gulf of Suez from Basra bound for Hampton Roads, she collided with the American Liberty ship Henry Dearborn and sank between the shipping lanes. In 2014 an expedition identified the wreck by cleaning the shipyard plate, which read "Lithgows Shipbuilders Port Glasgow".
