San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize
Boca Bacalar lies inside the Bacalar Chico National Park and Marine Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site on Ambergris Caye's northern tip where Belize's barrier reef meets Mexican waters. Reachable only by boat, about an hour from San Pedro or Caye Caulker, it sees less traffic than reefs to the south, and the coral shows it: healthier cover, more color, less boat damage. Expect reef flats and coral heads worked by parrotfish, wrasse, black grouper and horse-eye jacks. Green, loggerhead and hawksbill turtles turn up regularly, nurse sharks rest on sandy breaks, and spotted eagle rays cross open water. Antillean manatees hold year-round in the reserve's seagrass. A five-year survey found hard coral cover rising here even as the reef's overall health declined. Good for reef life without crowds.
