Maldives
The Barnacle was installed in November 1996 by Wolf Hilbertz and Tom Goreau as a demonstration of the Biorock method (mineral accretion), powered by solar energy. In 1998 it received the Theodore M. Sperry Award from the Society for Ecological Restoration. The steel structure is shaped like a barnacle, roughly 20 feet long by 12 feet high. In 2026 it is presented as the Maldives' first electric reef. In the years before 2009 it was switched off, in order to monitor the long-term sustainability of electric reefs without power.
