Maldives
The reef is covered in live hard corals, with overhangs where lobsters, nurse sharks and sting rays are commonly seen. It rings the whole island, and strong swimmers can circle it completely in about two hours.
On the outer slope of the reef, 225 m in front of the Sunset Jetty, lies the Vabbinfaru Lotus, a steel structure shaped like a lotus flower, about 12 m across. A reef restoration structure, it was built between 4 and 13 November 2001 and powered up on 15 November 2001, under the supervision of architect Wolf Hilbertz and coral scientist Tom Goreau. The Lotus uses the mineral accretion technique (Biorock): a low-voltage electric current makes limestone grow on the steel, where broken coral fragments are attached, using about 600 watts of power.
In the Maldives, the months from November to April tend to be the driest and sunniest, and in July and August the rains can last longer.
