Egypt
The name Banana Reef comes from the shape of the main reef, a banana-shaped crescent that encloses a coral garden and two pinnacles. These two pinnacles, covered in soft corals, stand straight out from the southwestern end of the reef and rise towards the surface.
The site is known for its large colonies of bannerfish guarding a fan-shaped boulder. Besides the bannerfish, there are street sweepers, nose-doctor fish, emperor angelfish and puffer fish. Soft corals are everywhere, along with an abundance of reef fish such as glass fish, crocodile fish, lionfish and angelfish. In spring, eagle rays tend to appear, along with occasional turtles and whitetip reef sharks.
