Maldives
Fuvahmulah, where the site is located, is the only island of its atoll: an oceanic platform reef without a lagoon, surrounded by a fringing reef. It rises steeply from the deep Indian Ocean, and its hard-coral reefs and drop-offs support a rich variety of reef fish and pelagic species.
Fuvahmulah is famous for its year-round tiger shark encounters. In Fuvahmulah, aggregations of scalloped hammerhead sharks appear to be seasonal, with most sightings between February and May and between October and December. Oceanic manta rays are usually seen there seasonally, with a peak between March and May. For hammerhead schools in Fuvahmulah, the best time is usually from October to April.
