The Al Kahfain began life as the Ulster Queen, launched on 1 December 1966. Built in 1967 by the Cammell Laird shipyard in Birkenhead for the Belfast Steamship Co., she was a 115 m ro-ro passenger and car ferry working the Belfast–Liverpool service. She later sailed as Med Sea, Al Kahera, Ala-Eddin, Poseidonia and La Patria, until she was sold in May 2005 to Al-Kahfain, of Saudi Arabia, and renamed Al Kahfain. In 2005 she began carrying pilgrims from Egypt to Saudi Arabia on the Hajj route to Mecca.
In 2009, with her paint flaking off, three of the ship's names could be read on the hull: Poseidonia, Al Khafain and Ulster Queen. In 2012, the upturned hull was still breaking up. The hull has become reef substrate, colonized by corals and fish, and the dive passes a coral garden next to the wreckage, with many hard coral species and the typical Red Sea fish.
Boats can only stop at the wreck with a south wind; in other conditions it is dived as a one-way dive, ending at the moorings on the east side of Shaab Sheer. Since it depends on sea and weather conditions, the site is only dived in good weather.
